From Antiquity to the Middle Ages

The Bayssan site has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period, followed by a Gallo-Roman farm that was later replaced by a prosperous Roman villa. Viticulture was already flourishing here, benefiting from the estate’s proximity to the Via Domitia and the thriving trade routes of the Mediterranean world.

During the Middle Ages, around 1075, the Romanesque Church of Saint-Félix de Bayssan was built and can still be admired today. The estate subsequently came into the possession of several noble families and lords of Béziers, reflecting the rich and evolving history of the region. 

The Division of the Estate After the French Revolution

Following the French Revolution, the estate was divided into two separate properties:
• Bayssan-le-Haut
• Bayssan-le-Bas

In the mid-19th century, Bayssan-le-Haut was acquired by Apollonie Cure and Father Jean Gailhac with the vision of establishing an orphanage for boys. For more than a century, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary devoted themselves to caring for and educating the children who found a home there. 

The Construction of the Wine Estate Château

The present-day Château de Bayssan-le-Bas was built around 1880 by the Sahuc family, a prominent wine-growing family from the Béziers region. Designed by the Bordeaux architect Louis Garros, renowned for his magnificent wine estate châteaux, the residence was built at the heart of the surrounding vineyards. 
This period marked the golden age of winemaking in the Languedoc. Thanks to the Canal du Midi and the expansion of the railway network, the wines of the Béziers region were exported on an unprecedented scale. The great wine-growing families of the time went on to build many prestigious châteaux throughout the countryside surrounding Béziers. 

From the 20th Century to the Present Day

After changing hands several times, part of the estate was acquired in the 1980s by the Hérault Departmental Council to preserve this remarkable site. Over time, Bayssan has evolved into a major cultural and leisure destination in the region. 

Having fallen into disrepair over the years, the château was meticulously restored between 2022 and 2023. Today, it welcomes guests to its elegant accommodations and hosts private events within its three-hectare parkland. 

At the same time, the Domaine de Bayssan has become one of the region’s leading cultural venues, home to a theatre, an open-air amphitheatre and performance spaces managed by Hérault Culture.
